Unilever Ethics Centre

Launched in 1998 at the University of Natal, the Unilever Ethics Centre exists to help build ethics capacity, both inside and outside the University, by offering courses, seminars and workshops, by doing research, offering consulting services, building partnerships among people who share its vision and aims, and by means of community service. The centre is staffed by: Professor Martin Prozesky (Director), Professor Ben Parker (Deputy Director), Adjunct Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, Ms Melissa Stobie (Lecturer), Mr Felix Murove (Lecturer) and Mrs. Diana Hawkins (Administrative Assistant). In addition, a number of colleagues from a range of disciplines are Associate members of the Centre.
A particular concern of the Centre is to understand the ethical dimension of human existence in relation to the opportunities and challenges of three great contemporary realities: democratic transformation, cultural diversity and economic empowerment.
The Centre’s approach to ethics is multidisciplinary and non-sectarian, with a strong emphasis on applied ethics in ...
Unilever Ethics Centre is a post from: Degrees

Ethical Studies Degree

The Context
The Unilever Ethics Centre serves both the University of Natal and our wider South African society, which at this time:
is characterized above all by democratic transformation, cultural diversity and redress of past injustices;
is challenged by economic and gender disparity, AIDS, violence and environmental damage; and
provides opportunities for creative, new ventures that draw on our strengths and meet our challenges.
Central to those strengths is the moral wisdom of Africa itself, enriched by the ethics of philosophies both religious and secular that have their origins in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world.
The Vision
Our vision in the Unilever Ethics Centre is based on these realities, most of which are also present within the University.
Amidst them, South Africa’s most pressing ethics need is enhanced ethical competence in individuals, social structures and organizations. Meeting this need involves the academic study of ethics, best ethical practice and renewed moral motivation, based on research ...
Ethical Studies Degree is a post from: Degrees

Undergraduate Ethics Studies Degree

Aside from our off-campus courses, the Unilever Ethics Centre currently offers four on-campus, credit-bearing courses. Members of the Centre also contribute to courses located in other disciplines, like the Centre for Environment and Development (CEAD), at the University of Natal. Three of our courses are undergraduate offerings:
    * Ethics Studies 110 , “Applied Global Ethics”, is a first-semester, first-year level course located in the School of Human and Social Studies, bearing 16 credit points. The course begins by tracing the world’s main value-systems: African, Chinese, Judeo-Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Secular. We also briefly cover some key thoughts and terms in the Western philosophical debate about ethics. Using the theoretical background of these analyses, we then turn to examine particular practical issues, which may include: wealth and poverty, war and violence, the environment, business ethics, and morality and the law.

Human and Management Sciences Degree

Most people, when they come to University, want a multi-purpose degree. Typically, we offer in our Faculty three multi-purpose degrees, which have a general focus but allow lots of choice: a Bachelor of Arts (which always includes a language subject), a Bachelor of Social Science (much the same but without language as a necessary component) and a Bachelor of Commerce for those who want a degree which deals generally with business. In these degrees, you take two main subjects (majors) but have a pretty wide choice of other subjects to make up the balance.
These general degrees, which suit a wide range of purposes, all provide an excellent platform for more focused studies later. In many cases, these general degrees offer the best preparation for working life, in that they train the successful student to think, to analyse, to express herself or himself effectively, and give a broad general knowledge.
Honours and Masters-by-Coursework

For Honours, you are required to register for four modules. Each counts for 25% of your overall mark for the course. Three of these consist in the three modules listed below; the fourth involves writing a research essay of 10 000 words. Normally you would take two course-work modules in the first semester and one in the second semester. Examinations in each module are written at the end of the semester in which you take it.
You are expected to have the outline of a long essay topic worked out with your appointed supervisor by mid-April, and to spend the mid-year vacation and half the second semester working on it. It should be completed by the beginning of November to leave you free to concentrate on the examination for the remaining course-work module.
For Masters-by-coursework, you are required to register for two of the modules listed below, and for a thesis of ...
Honours and Masters-by-Coursework is a post from: Degrees
